Coming Soon to a Theater near Me …

… And near you if you’re in the Grand Strand area: The ROCK Worship Gathering.

Sunday is gonna be a wild ride.  Last Sunday featured a “puke video compilation” and a door on the platform that several people walked through to say:  “I give my life to Jesus Christ.”  That was in addition to a couple of other video moments, a few songs by a full band, and a message designed to shake lukewarm pretenders out of their lethargy.  This Sunday?

  • Kelly Clarkson (sorta) will visit us and sing live.
  • We’ll hear a little of the old Johnny Paycheck classic “Take this Job and …”
  • A minute or so of Dwight K. Schrute(If you don’t know Dwight, stop right now and go google him, rent all the videos of The Office at Blockbuster, and stop being a total loser)
  • A little slice of Scarlet Johansen from The Nanny Diaries.
  • And, of course, some songs for worship and a message from God’s Word.

QUESTION WORTH ASKING:  Why all the goofy creative stuff? Why spend the time (& we spend a lot of it)  putting together video, and showing clips of movies, and dressing funny sometimes, and all the other craziness that characterizes The ROCK?  Isn’t the Word enough?  Some have accused us (& churches like us) of merely entertaining … a “dog ‘n pony show” just to attract a crowd.  Some thoughts on that:

  • First and foremost, nothing compares with the teaching and internalizing of God’s Word. Nothing.  Everything else we do is aimed at enhancing that.  And our teaching is tougher and more blunt than most.
  • Jesus was creative. He pulled a coin out of fish’s mouth to make a teaching point.  He taught from a boat seat once.  God really showed off His creativity when He made a little thing we like to call “the universe.”
  • We are trying to unleash the artistry in as many people as possible.  God gave a lot of people a lot of talent, and we want to give them/you the opportunity (within our vision) to  glorify Him with it.
  • Are we entertaining for the purpose of drawing a crowd?  Honesty? YEP, and without apology.  Call it “inner-tainment.”  We are trying to capture the imagination of people who would normally never go to any church.  But it is for a specific purpose.  Laughing last Sunday at a very inappropriate “puke video” let us relax … before we saw a very serious verse about what makes Jesus want to puke.
  • Because we can.   And because we love unchurched, unreached, uninterested people.    Our vision is to do anything but sin to reach those farthest from God.  I’ll dress up like Lady Ga Ga if that will keep a soul out of the flames of Hell.

Yeah, I said that.
