What is the ONE MAIN THING we can do to improve our world?  What ONE MAIN THING can we do that will out-live us?  And did Jesus weigh in with an answer to that question?

I believe He did, and many call his statement on the matter “The Great Commission.” It goes like this:

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. – Matthew 28:19

The main thing, according to Jesus was/is to make disciples. Those other items in His statement are important:  baptize them, teach them, believe Jesus is with you empowering you to to do that main thing.   But those things revolve around the main thing, and the main thing is making disciples.

There are lots of important things to do in the ministry of a church:  make a plan for Sunday, make plans for the future, make buildings, make ministry, make a difference in the community.  But those things orbit the main thing too.  It is possible to produce a very impressive-looking ministry without actually making disciples  (Read that statement again if you need to).   It is very possible to have great singing, and preaching, and creativity, and hype, and buzz, and build stuff WITHOUT building disciples.

So, here’s our strategy for keeping the Main Thing … the MAIN Thing:

• Create a Sunday worship environment that engages the heart and mind of those who normally wouldn’t go to any church.  We’re trying to produce an experience on Sunday you can’t wait to bring your lost friend to.
• Help people find or start a small group (we call them MYGroups) to examine Sunday’s teaching in more depth, build relationships, and serve the community with the group.
• School of ROCK: A series of Saturday morning monthly mini-seminars to teach vital spiritual truths.
• Your Next Step Discipleship Institute: A much more in-depth twice-a-week training course for those who desire to be high-impact spiritual leaders.
