Haiti (Part 2)

As if Haiti didn’t already have enough problems. Now everyone who survived the Category 7 quake will divide life into “Before the Earthquake” and “After the Earthquake.” 45-50,000 dead. More injured, displaced, and devastated. A lot more. UN workers are digging mass graves. Machete-wielding youths are stalking the streets and looting what interests them. Government relief efforts are getting clogged and frustrated.
It’s like something out of an “End of the World” movie.
THE WRONG RESPONSES
- Pat Robertson says Haiti brought this on themselves by selling their soul to the devil
- Danny Glover says this is some kind of retribution from Mother Earth for a failure to take more action at the Climate Change forum. Can somebody tell Danny that Avatar was fictional?
- Rush Limbaugh says we already give too much money to Haiti through tax money forwarded there.
- Now is not the time to politicize or pontificate. From either side of the “aisle.”
RIGHT RESPONSES
Take a good look at what is going on right now. You are seeing America at her best. In the middle of a pathetic economy, Americans are reaching deep into their hearts and pockets to help. Social networking sites, workplaces, schools, churches, and other organizations are buzzing with efforts to alleviate the suffering. Heard any credible America-bashing over the last few days? Me neither. It’s the same impulse you saw after 9/11 and Katrina. When it comes right down to it, we are a big-hearted people. So how about you? Some options:
- Samaritan’s Purse
- Compassion International
- Text the word “Haiti” to 90999 to donate $10 immediately to the Red Cross
- Baptist Global Response
- Give this Sunday at The ROCK, and designate it to “Haiti Relief.”
- PRAY. For those grieving, suffering, homeless, traveling, serving.
All money given toward “Haiti Relief” this Sunday will be given through Baptist Global Response. That money will be channeled through Southern Baptist missionaries – many of whom will remain on-site long term. The Internat’l Mission Board of the SBC is a trusted and proven partner in answering the call to disaster relief. And SBC missionaries will be looking to meet physical AND spiritual needs.

Come leave a comment on my blog. I’m giving $.25 to Haiti relief for each comment.

(I will probably give more than that since I only have a pitiful 10 comments so far! LOL)
