Weekend De-Brief
It was a whole weekend of ministry. I started getting calls and texts early Saturday asking what we’d do about the Darden Terrace Fall Festival since the rain was falling. (By the way, somebody needs to think of something more creative to name a “Fall Festival,” don’t they/we? ROCKtoberfest? ROCK the Carbs? CandyCramaJamma?) Anyway, we trusted God to part the skies, and He came through. Hundreds of hot dogs, enough candy to keep every kid awake ’til next week, games everywhere, our 1200-sq-ft inflatable, some new friendships, and some soggy clothes all ended up being a great day.
As if to reward those who worked hard, there was a bless-ed extra hour of sleep Saturday night. Who do I contact to suggest we add an hour to EVERY Saturday?
Then Sunday morning:
- We started the teaching series “The Naked Truth.” I got a call late in the week from somebody who was offended by our “naked” series. Seemed cool with it when I explained. Kinda disappointed me.
- Naked truth links the innocence of Adam and Eve when their marriage began with our desperate need NOW to hear unvarnished, unadorned naked truth about relationships.
- We had a slight change to the “schedule.” We will ALWAYS do everything we can think of to enhance your worship experience. The Spirit of God does what ONLY He can do. But we want to do whatever WE can do too.
- Band was great, atmosphere was rowdy, comments have been great, fruit will be … ?
- Yeah – I kinda did a shameless plug for Mark Stanley’s business. Ever wonder if drinking Red Bull on the stage is “product placement” for my buddy Lee Rochester?
- Our goal is NOT to make nice marriages nicer. It is to see radical life-change rescue bad marriages. It is to drive single people into the arms of Christ so deeply that they never compromise sexually. It is to help us all develop relationships through which the beauty of Christ is on display to all.
- Somebody mentioned that these are EXACTLY the kind of messages to which we need to most aggressively invite our friends. True. The Bible is ALWAYS practical, but showing where it does relationship repair is WHOLE NUTHA LEVEL!
- Next Sunday is “The Man Message.” Call it testosterighteous. One of my personal goals for The ROCK’s ministry is to unashamedly honor manhood. Real manhood. Godly manhood. Contrary to popular thought, you can be a real man and a real Christ-follower simultaneously. Contrary to Hollywood nonsense, real women want real men.
- And if you’re a male who doesn’t show up next Sunday, I guess I’ll know why. Loser.
