Homosexual Lovers

Here’s a quotable quote for you:  ALL Christians should be “homosexual lovers.” That’s because all Christians should love everybody. The need to understand that has been underscored by the recent horrid remarks by a N.C. pastor. The sermon video has gone viral.  Rev. Charles Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church advocated fencing in “lesbians and queers.” The fencing in would – at least in Worley’s mind – drive homosexuals to extinction because, according to Worley, “They can’t reproduce.” Referring to President Obama, he goes on to say he will not vote for anybody who is a homosexual lover.  Here’s the VIDEO.

God help us.

Those looking for evidence showing that conservative Christians secretly hate and plot the destruction of homosexuals now have an Exhibit A.

So let me personally repudiate and refute that. I shudder at his words. NONE of my conservative preacher friends ever say anything close to that.  Not from their pulpit. Not behind closed doors. Rev. Worley’s words are some of the most ignorant and hateful I’ve heard. It’s like he’s trying to make the JV team at Westboro Baptist.  What he said was not taken out of context or misunderstood. It was just ungodly. And bat-crap crazy.

I personally oppose homosexual marriage. I oppose creating any special rights on the basis of sexuality.  I oppose forcing or coercing anyone to call homosexuality “normal.” I believe (because the Bible clearly and consistently says so) that homosexuality is a sin. I believe homosexuality, while more complex than the subject matter of most arguments about it, is a choice.

But, contrary to what Rev. Worley said, all Christians should be “homosexual lovers.” All Christians should love homosexuals. We should love everybody. And not just pretend to do so.  I do not see or relate to my homosexual friends chiefly on the basis of their sexuality.  The same goes for my New York Yankees friends and their horrendous baseball loyalty. We imitate our Savior by loving everybody.

We should do so while forcefully remembering that prior to salvation we were ALL enemies of God. Not just unbelievers, not just unconvinced, … enemies.  His heart toward us was not some Nazi-esque effort to fence us in, and eagerly wait for us to die off.  He loved us enough to come break down the fences and save us.  Homosexuals are not the enemies of Bible-believing Christians. They are our friends, and family members, and co-workers, and church members. There are more Christians struggling with homosexual desires than Rev. Worley and Westboro dare admit. By the way, what’s his plan for adulterers? And gossips?

Here’s the really hard part: Jesus also expects me to be a Worley-lover.

Dangit.
